There were no surprises here and at 10:4 at the half time it looked like the Meyers were going to walk away with the game. Key strategy for the Meyers was to neutralize Moggridge who has been the heart of the Sharks’ team this year. Csepregi and Christie took care of the problem limiting Alex to just one goal. The Sharks are looking strong for next year and some predict that the Meyers won their first and last OWPL this year. That remains to be seen. But 9 months from now as the teams trade a few players anything can happen. The 2006 OWPL, the 4th edition, was the best one so far.

Ravens vs. Hull Youth - Bronze Medal
Hull won the 2006 OWPL Bronze medal game in a fierce battle. Although the Ravens were missing some key players due to exam commitments they put up a good fight. Unfortunately, these days, you can’t win a water polo game with 4 goals. Hull used a mixed defense of pressing and playing a crash-zone, which took hole-man Avlijas out of the game for the most part. On offense the smaller, younger team countered every time and drove the Ravens’ defense to pieces. A nice game for both teams to finish the OWPL season.

Ottawa Sharks vs. Ravens
Perhaps the Ravens considered this game as post-season relaxation activity or maybe the loss of Pat Bickerton (injured in the 1st quarter), Milan Stevanovic and J.F Jacques (exams) was just too much to handle. In any case, they never stood a chance and the Sharks' damage had gone beyond repair by the middle of the 3rd quarter. Cleverly sticking to the game plan they played patiently and wisely beyond their years. So, in the 2006 OWPL the Ottawa Sharks advance to the gold medal game.
Play-Offs Game Report
Ottawa Meyers vs. Hull Youth
Combining all their wisdom that spans through 5 generations (I’m not kidding here…) the Ottawa Meyers slowly but surely bulldozed the Hull Youth team to the ground. Unable to match the physical strength of the Meyers, Hull heavily relied on counter attacks and a zone defense that was designed to take Sasa Palamarevic out of the center forcing the Meyer’s weaker shooters to finish their attacks. Although the plan was executed most of the time, the Csepregi-Christie-Meyer combo was just too much to handle. Palamarevic alone scored 7 goals. Csepregi added 5 and Meyer, in addition to 4-5 assists scored 2. Blake Christie scored the nicest goal of the game. He tipped a 20 meter pass backwards right into the bottom corner of the net. Dusko Dakic from Hull spent most of his time fighting off Csepregi and Christie who took turns pummeling him all game long. And that’s just the way Dusko likes it. He scored 3 goals and drew a number of kick outs. A great exit for Hull who will now play the loser of the Ravens vs. Sharks game for 3rd place.

Ravens vs. Ottawa Sharks
Silly mistakes on both sides, yet it was a good fast-paced game. The Ravens, peeking for OUA Finals in 2 days, were psychologically sharper and more focused but this did not bother Moggridge who scored 4 of the Shark's 5 goals. Four of the Raven vets put away 2 goals s apiece and Tanguay still remains the backbone of the Carleton men's water polo team.

Ottawa Sternes vs. Ravens
Being so close to X-Mass, the Sternes almost pulled off a miracle. The game was close to the end but the Ravens used their superior shape and capitalized on the less-then-neutral riffing to secure this mandatory victory. Dejan Suletic and Milan Stevanovic were out with injuries for this one, which further fueled the Sternes' hopes for their first victory. Maybe next time. Great game Sternes!

Ottawa Sharks vs. GG's
Not much to report in this game either. The gap in basics, as it had been written before, is too much to handle for the GG's. Without a good foundation it's tough to build a good house. The GG's will need to focus on recruiting for next year and hope to be in the top 4 like last year.

Ottawa Sharks vs. Ottawa Sternes
Not much happened in this lop-sided game; the score explains it all. Andrew Jones was on fire as he scored 4 goals. Alex Moggridge brought out what we have come to expect from him and scored 6 times. The top four teams have pulled away from the bottom two, beyond repair and with this win the Sharks have taken over the lead in the OWPL. The most interesting game next week will be the Sharks vs. Hull game where Hull will get the chance to take over the lead.
Game Report - Game 17
Ravens vs. Ottawa Meyers
It’s hard to believe that the Ravens could blow a 7:1 lead, going into the 2nd quarter but it happened. After an amazing start and 5 goals by Dejan Suletic the Ravens looked like they had the 3 points but the huge lead seemed to take a crippling effect on the on them. The Meyers, quickly capitalizing on the malfunction of the Ravens’ system scored 4 goals and the game was wide open again at 7:5. Although the Ravens managed to pull away one more time (14:10) the combination of Bill Meyer, Zoltan and Blake Christie always proved to be too much of a challenge for the younger team. While the Ravens did deserve to win the game, the Meyers’ comeback and last minute effort to tie the game speaks for itself. Two points for both teams and Dejan’s 9 (!!) goals helped him to the #3 spot on the scorer’s list.
Game Report - Game 16
GG's vs. Hull Youth
The difference in conditioning and the basic skill levels was the dominant issue once again as Hull steadily grinded the GG’s down to the ground. As usual, Dakic lead the pack with 6 goals but his supporting cast was right with him all along. Vidicevic, Rajic and Montes I, all scored 3 times each. The score reflects the true difference between the teams.
Game Report - Game 15
Ottawa Sharks vs. Ottawa Meyers
Under normal circumstances these two teams match up against each other fairly well but with both Zoltan and Sasa Palamarevic unavailable for the game, the Meyers didn’t stand a chance. Up until the half mark the Meyers were only down 6:4 but just 12 minutes later the score was 13:6 for the Sharks, going into the last quarter. Alex Moggridge, as we have come to expect, did most of the damage with 6 goals. Sharpshooter Charles added 3, as did Callum, who played worthy of a guy who warms up to the tunes of Killswitch Engage. John Conway, still a Cadet, also added 2 goals in the 18:10 victory. The Meyers, feeling the loss of their two former Senior National Team players, had trouble keeping up with the Sharks’ counterattacks but also had difficulties on offence. Chief among these problems was their inability to get the ball to Christie, who posed a real and immediate danger in front of the Sharks net. And since no one was able to contain Blake individually, the Sharks neutralized him as a team. Still, Blake managed to score 3 goals. Sasa Stevanovic also added 3, while Bill Meyer continued his leadership in assisting the goal scorers and doing most of the swimming for his team. On a happy note for the Meyers, goaltender Ruben Anand is starting to resemble his former self. Ruben was the saving grace in an otherwise forgettable game. The Meyers have a tough game ahead of them while the Sharks will be able to relax a bit in the next round.
Game Report - Game 14
Ravens vs. Hull Youth
This game was probably the best game of the year (aside from the Ravens-Meyers game perhaps) as both teams traded goals 1 or 2 at a time. Although not a high-scoring game, the constant moving, counter-attacking, the saves from both Tanguay and Aleksic and the over-all intensity, made the game spectacular and particularly enjoyable. Dakic (Hull) is still out with his eye injury and Avlijas (Ravens) was away preparing for an exam so the argument could be made that the 2 teams were at close to even strength. In the end the power of the bigger, older team was the dominant one. Kokanovic from Hull was in the meat grinder between the big Raven Hole checks and still managed to score 2 goals and draw 4 kick-outs. Nuyens and the older Suletic brother both scored 2 goals for the Ravens but this time it was a well balanced team effort that got the victory. The second half of the league should be a full out war for the top spot but it is evident that any of the top four teams could win the OWPL this year.
Game Report - Game 13
GG's vs. Ottawa Sternes
In the battle that relegated the loser to last place it was the GG's that came out victoriously but it was not a smooth sailing by any means. The Sternes, reinforced by Bernie Forestell and Sharks coach Jerry Tesanovic, held their own until 5:8 but in the end the slightly better conditioned and skilled GG's were able to pull away to 12:5. Brian Mosley debuted on the scorer's list with 3 excellent and important goals while Hanson and Caswell brought their usual by scoring 3 and 4, respectively. Evan Peters, with support from his mom, sister and lovely girlfriend in the stance, scored 2 massive goals (1 penalty) but also made friends with the crossbar and the posts a number of times. Jerry Tesanovic took on the role of player coach in the water, successfully delegating the workload to his players for the most part. Both teams have now reached the half mark of the OWPL and their new goal is to do better then the last rounds. Both teams have room for improvement, especially the Sternes but then again no one has more fun in the league then Jeff Brown and co.
Game Report - Game 12
Ottawa Sternes vs. Hull Youth
Although Hull lost the league’s leading scorer early in the 2nd period, due to a clumsy foul by one of the Sternes players, the young team never let the old boys recover from the 7:1 lead. Hull played well and disciplined for the most part but at times they were thrown off by difference in the physical strength of the two teams. The Hull team, in turn tried to remain quick and mobile to draw exclusions and get counter attack goals. The fact that the win was a team effort was evident as every Hull player, including the 14 year old Yovan, scored at least 1 goal. Evan Peters from the Sternes finally discovered that he’s got one of the best shots in the OWPL and put it to good use by scoring 3 unstoppable rockets, while team captain Joel Primeau and Jeff Brown added 2 goals apiece.
Game Report - Game 11
Ottawa Sharks vs. Ravens
The Sharks were only leading twice: Once at 1:0 and then at 11:10. It could be argued that both teams played below their coaches’ expectations and that the team that made fewer mistakes won. The Raven’s coach would probably agree with that statement and add that today his team made 3-4 times as many mistakes as the Sharks. The Ravens were simply unable to focus and committed so many “unforced errors” that they basically threw the game away. There were 12-15 (!) direct passes to the opposite team, the ball rarely ever found the open players and the defensive tactics looked chaotic. The Ravens, however, are still struggling with multiple injuries, University midterms and the fact that injured goal-tender extraordinaire, Marc Tanguay, is still unable to perform his duties often results in a disorganized and frustrating game. There is no panic however and during some recent constructive team discussions it became clear that the team needs to pull itself together and focus on the upcoming events rejuvenated and physically healthy. The Sharks, although clumsy at times showed great comeback qualities as they worked of 2-3 goal deficits more then ones. Led by the sneaky-wizard, Alex Moggridge, and sharpshooter Charles the Sharks dazzled the crowd with clever passes and laser precision shooting. Even action sequences that did not result in goals are note-worthy to mention, such as Moggridge’s look away free-throw, for example, which hit the post completely catching the defense and the goalie off guard. Given the age difference between the two teams Alex was almost “disrespectful” to make the defense look that bad. Despite the Raven’s engine revving only at about 45% they almost walked away with a victory but a few particularly unfortunate events allowed the Sharks to score 2 quick unanswered goals in the last minute. Up next are 2 very difficult games for both teams. Stay tuned!!
Game Report - Game 10
Ottawa Meyers vs. GG's
Like midgets at the urinals, the GG’s kept the Meyers on their toes for almost the entire game. Granted, Zoltan and Blake could not make it to tonight’s game but, nevertheless, the GG’s, as previously predicted, are improving fast and with the leadership of Scott Caswell and goaltender Martin Murray the GG’s forced the Meyers to give it all they had. Caswell was a one man army as he scored 5 goals into Ruben Anand’s net. Although Ruben was a brick wall for almost the entire game, he still seems to be in denial of the new 5 meter free throw rule, which suited Caswell just fine. And since Blake and Zoltan were not present “Big” Sasa Palamarevic took it upon himself to work over-time for both missing stars and almost single handedly held the front line for the Meyers. By the time the GG’s realized that Sasa refused to be shut down one on one (even 3 on 1) tonight, he scored 7 goals. Bill Meyer re-living his Olympic years in ’84 was the fastest moving guy in the pool and if the OWPL kept track of assists, he would be at the very top of the list. Professor McNaught was also having a great game and on top of his usual 10 meter back-hand shots, that left bruises on Martin Murray’s chest, he scored 2 beautiful goals. Srecko Pavicevic added 2 more and Sasa Stevanovic, while he was re-assigned to guard Caswell, also scored 1 rocket from outside. Newcomer Davor” Zoolander” also netted one of his own. In short, the better 1 on 1 skills of the Meyers was enough to defeat the GG’s who lack the depth and experience to beat such a great caliber team.
Game Report - Game 9
Ottawa Meyers vs. Hull Youth
Knowing the competitive personalities on both sides it was no surprise that the game started out rough and by the end of the first quarter the CEGEP pool, almost packed to capacity, witnessed a serious territorial dispute between Dusko Dakic (Junior NT) and Sasa Palamarevic (Ex-Senior NT). Ref, Klymowsky, immediately set the tone and called a double ejection but he was quick to note after the game that if it wasn’t for Blake Christie’s intimidating size and personality the conflict could have escalated even further. In terms of water polo, the first period was dominated by the Meyers who took text-book tempo shots from 6-7m to hit the back of Dusan’s cage. The young Hull players, under Dusko's guidance regrouped in the second quarter and focused on their driving and counter game to generate some kick-outs from the Meyers, which paid of and resulted in a 5 goal come back. The Meyers answered with a few counters from Zoltan, Bill Meyer himself, and Blake. In the end the experience and strength of the Meyers overpowered the Hull Youth team, who fought to the bitter end. Great game.
Quotes from the game:
"I didn't think we would do as well as we did, but we worked hard on our drives and counters and were rewarded with some good come-back goals..." Dusko Dakic, when asked at the end of the game about his team's performance.
Answer - "A little bit of both!" - Blake Christie. Question: “Is your recent weight gain from the Gym or the Deli?”
Game Report - Game 8
Ravens vs. Ottawa Sternes
The ever-improving Sternes' team put up a good fight but it wasn't enough to stop the undefeated Ravens. Jeff Brown, Ottawa's premier back-hander, netted 3 for his team again (one being another 11 meter cross-cage back-hand) which quickly educated replacement goalie Sean Martin on some key secrets of goaltending. Lesson #1: 11 meter back-hand goals are not acceptable. Sure enough, Sean did stop the next 2 similar efforts. Over -all, it was an easy game for the Ravens, who, at this point, with the exception of back-hands, proved to be better then the Sternes.
Game Report - Game 7
GG's vs. Ottawa Sharks
Already improving but still slightly struggling the GG's went up against the Sharks in a game where the outcome was fairly predictable. The Sharks, fast and with a well balanced team, attempted to over run the GG's but at the end of the 1st quarter the score was only 2:0. The GG’s main goal was to shut down the Sharks’ counter attacks and it did work even if only for a while. In the end the young team pulled away and had it not been Scott" The Mouth" Caswell's 4 goals, the score could have been uglier. Charles B. also added 4 goals of his own while six other Sharks players contributed to the goal scoring this evening. Towards the end emotions ran high and the game started to get rough but it ended just in time. Hull won the last two editions of the OWPL but this year there are at least 4 teams with a chance to win. The OWPL is about to get interesting!
Game Report - Game 6
Ottawa Meyers vs. Ottawa Sternes
With less then their full roster, the Ottawa Sternes’ team was the toothless tiger against the Meyers tonight and although Jeff Brown, Evan Peters and Andrew Jones held their own for a while, in the end, they were no match for the likes of Zoltan Csepregi, Bill Meyer and the two Sasas as they found themselves out matched at virtually every aspect of the game. Meyer lead the game with 7 (!) assists while "Big" Sasa and Zoltan led the scoring with 5 and 4 respectively. Stevanovic added 3 and PhD McNaught found his old form also adding 3. Jeff Brown on the Sternes team also scored 3 times, one of them a back hand, which he fired high and across in the top corner catching (Ruben Anand’s temporary replacement in nets) Srecko Pavicevic off guard. Srecko was on the ball for most of the game but he hit the snooze button on Brown’s 10 meter back hand. With their full roster later this week, the Sternes will likely put up a better fight against the Carleton Ravens (Thursday) and the Ottawa Sharks (Saturday).
