The Meyers earned their play off spot easier then expected. With an outstanding collective team effort on D and Zoltan's almost record breaking 9 (!) goals [Dusko Dakic is the record holder with 11 in a single game] the Meyers cruised past the GG's without breaking a sweat. The final pair-up depends on the last game between Hull and the Titans.

Hull 12- GG's 8

Like so many times in the past Edgrado 'Manuel Estiarte' Montes put the Hull team on his back and scored 7 goals on the GG's goalie who looked helpless against Iggy's hezi shots. The GG's in turn blew an 8:4 lead and now have to fight the Meyers for thier play off spot. It will not be an easy task.

Ravens 8 - Sternes 12 

Nov 26

One last time, the Sternes flexed their dormant water polo muscles and they thrashed the 1st place Ravens in style. Too bad they never were able to play at full strength until now. If the Ravens win this year’s OWPL the Sternes will become the league’s uncrowned champions. Dusan in nets was outstanding, good ol’buddies Aco and Kico were true sharpshooters who lit up Tanguay from the outside with dingers after dingers. Marc who had a good game himself was helpless at times. (Not that his blockers helped enough). Sasa, once again, showed that he is the real Tony Danza and scored 4 goals while closely guarded by the Raven’s big-boys. A great finish of the regular season for the Sternes who will now play against a yet unknown team for 5th in a best of 3 series.

Both sides missing key players. Edgrado was the star of the game with 6 goals. Zoltan and Andras with 5 and 4. Hull looked sleepy and unfocused. The Meyers, in better and better shape, will be hrad to stop.

Ravens 17 - Sternes 14

A team effort to neutralize Sasa, who once again, brought a knife to a pillow fight and punished everyone who dared to get in his way. Still managed to score 6 goals despite the Ravens' zone D. A great physical game where everyone got a good work out!

Good effort from the GG's but not enough to handle Sasa and the rest of the full line up on the Sternes team.

Some of the most questionable refereeing in recent memory is the first thing that comes to mind. With many penalties and turn-overs against the Meyers it was a miracle that they kept up with the hard-working GG's who also enjoyed some real home-pool advantage. With a man down in the last quarter the Meyers almost managed to tie the game as Andras' shot hit the cross bar and stopped on the goal line right at the buzzer. As we said earlier, the league is well balanced and no team expects to lose against anyone! Great local competition.

Ravens 16 - Hull 14

A much easier victory for the Ravens then the score would indicate. Coming off a prefect 4:0 weekend in the OUA league the Ravens were on a roll and in perfect game-mode. Andrej Rajic led the game scoring with 6 but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Ravens' counter attacks and outside shooting. One of the best games of the year.

Ravens 5 - Titans 9

2 days and 2 victories agains the university teams for the Titans. Although not as easily as the night before against the GG's, the Titans still managed to control the games for the most part. The Ravens, without their number 1 sharp-shooter, Stefan Pavicevic, struggled on offence and were unable to break the zone which in the end cost them the game.

Not a chance for the GG's tonight. The Titans were faster and sharper in every aspect of the game. The difference between those who train 3 times and those who train 9 times a week is really starting to show. Great performance by the young team.

As we predicted at the beginning, it is finally starting to come together for the Meyers. Their conditioning is catching up and key players are slowly starting to resemble their former selves. Zoltan and Andras led the scoring in this game with 6 and 5 respectively followed by Blake Christie with 3. Sasa Palamarevic was practically taken out of the game but still managed to score 3 goals. When the Meyers are on it is very difficult to stop them. Another physical but good game!

Titans 15 - Sternes 6

Rumor has it that 2008 Olympian Sasa Palamarevic is back in the league next week after a scary shoulder injury. As far as this game went... Well the score speaks for itself. Conway's 6 goals alone would have been enough for a tie. Unfortunately for the Sternes John's team mates added 9 goals in a clear victory for the Titans.

Ravens 15 - Meyers 9

While highly entertaining and more then impressive, the Zoltan Csepregi show was not enough to pull off a win for the Meyers. Zoli scored 7 of the 9 goals while heavily guarded but the Ravens were too fast and in much better condition. Stefan Pavicevic of the Ravens added 6 of his own to climb to the top of the scoring list.

An unmotivated and much too relaxed Ravens' team almost lost the game to a very energetic and motivated GG's team. It didn't help the Ravens' cause that Gordon Cameron had to leave in the second quarter or that coach Szeri threw Pavicevic out of the pool for mouthing off once again but nevertheless the GG's played well and so far they are the most improved team in the league. Call it bad reffing or bad luck for the GG's, the Ravens managed to pull off a win but left the water feeling as though if they lost the game.

Sternes 5 - GG's 14

Without their full line up the Sternes just don't have a bite. Former Dutch international Daan De Groot stood out like a sore thumb and scored 6 outstanding goals. Dusan in nets was the saving grace for the Sternes. Without him it would have been real ugly.

Meyers 9 - Titans 7

Although Ruben Anand was away in Germany, the Meyers quickly discovered that Chris Merkley was just as capable at making badly needed saves. Add Peter Unger's 4 amazing goals from the hole and the Meyers saved another point in another bloody battle against the fast, well conditioned and disciplined Titans Youth Team. The press D by the bigger Meyers' team in the second half was key in this game as Blake Christie (Happy Birth Day, by the way) shut down the Titan's hole man at almost every attack. A great game and a well deserved tie for both teams.

Meyers 12 - Hull 11

In an epic battle that looked desperate for the Meyers for most of the game the old guys managed to come out on top despite missing 2 of their starters, Zoltan and Blake. Ruben Anand in nets put on a show that was hard to believe at times while Brennan Cartier, the former Junior NT star, put the team on his back and scored 4 huge goals to bring the Meyers back in the game (from a 2:6 deficit). Nick Fox added 3 of his own while Speedy Gonzales: AKA: Iggy Montes on the Hull team entertained the crowd with his own bag of tricks, which included a number of his trade-mark hezi shots. Edgardo led the scoring with 5 goals. The Meyers won this game with nothing but shier heart.

Ravens 11 - Titans 6

Right off a successful OUA weekend, the Ravens looked sharp and fast and too overwhelming for the young Titans team who suffered their second defeat in the year's OWPL. Nevertheless, the Titans' youth team will most likely improve more then any other team as the league continues.

Meyers 9 - Sternes 4

Too much fire and sprinting power for the Sternes to handle. Without the injured Palamarevic the Sternes are struggling to establish a powerful offensive game.

Defense was the key factor in this game. Lead by the 2 goaltenders with outstanding saves on both sides. Junior NT star John Conway was missing but nevertheless, the GG's deserved their first win the in the 2008 season. Coach Rancourt's risky move to bench the starters in the second quarter proved to have paid off, as the GG's only allowed 1 goal in the remaining 3 quarters!! Well done.

CARLETON RAVENS WIN THEIR 1ST EVER OWPL TITLE! STEFAN PAVICEVIC SCORES 7 GOALS IN THE GOLD MEDAL GAME!

The Ravens defeated the Ottawa Titans in an amazing and exciting game Monday night to capture their 1st ever OWPL title. Despite missing  3 starters, Dejan Suletic and Phil Sonea (exams) and Gordon Cameron (injury) the Ravens managed to come back from an early 2 goal deficit with an aggressive tight check and some key saves from Marc Tanguay! John Conway and Lyle Brooks did most of the damage for the Titans with 4 and 3 goals resp. but the biggest weapon of the young Titans team was their fast counter attacks. The Ravens kept pace with the Titans but not until the 2nd quarter when Stefan Pavicevic started his 7 goal scoring streak. Stefan's shots were bullets from all angles of the pool leaving the Titan goalies helpless at times. Congratulations to both teams for playing a very entertaining game pleasing the large crowd at the pool.

HULL YOUTH WIN 2008 OWPL BRONZE MEDAL!

Hull: Montes 4; Mitrovic 1; Rajic 3, Dabic 2; Stritkof 1

The Meyers fought hard but in the end it wasn't enough. With a few key players missing the Meyers just didn't have enough depth to keep up with the fast Hull team. The Meyers simply ran out of steam. Andras and Edgardo were the leading scorers tonight with 4 each. Andrej Rajic also added 3 to land the # 5 spot on the goal scorer's list. Zoltan, who is this year's top scorer with 45 goals, was kept to 1 goal, though he had the chances to score  6 or 7 like usual. Prof. Chris McNaught also got his 1st goal of the year, which came at a good time for the Meyers. A hard fought game where the better team came out on top.

The 6th edition of the Ottawa Water Polo League was by far the best and most competitive so far! When we look through the scores it's clear that every team has beat 1 or more of the higher ranking teams at least once.

The 6th Ottawa Water Polo League Preview(2008)

 
 
Finally! The OWPL reached the level where it has become impossible to predict the eventual winner. The teams are stacked with local stars and the competition promises to be tougher then the Octagon. Let’s look at the team previews and you can make your own prediction:
 
Ottawa Meyers
This may be the team to beat but, ask Saddam Hussein, and he’ll tell you what a big difference 1 year can make. The younger teams are catching up! The Meyers are stacked not just with current senior athletes but also a number of returning former Youth and Junior NT stars. The players include’84 Olympian Bill Meyer, Former NT star Zoltan Csepregi, Blake Christie and many returning former players such as Canada’s 1998 Cadet MVP Matt Moore, Chris Merkley, Brennan Cartier and Peter Unger. With Ruben Anand in nets the team is as solid as any OWPL team has ever been.
 
Carleton Ravens
Currently the best conditioned team with many local stars and OUA Champions to challenge any team for the gold medal. Marc Tanguay, Stefan Pavicevic, Dejan Suletic, Sasa Stevanovic are all OUA Champs as well as multiple medalists from various Nationals over the years. The well oiled Raven machine can beat any team any time.
 
Ottawa GG’s
Still in rebuilding stage, Luc Rancourt has done an amazing job keeping the program competitive and the results are stating to show. If GG’s star Scott Caswell can play as well as expected (and manages to stay in the games for more then 2 quarters) along with hard-shooter Kirill Kagner, the GG’s may surprise a few teams this year.
 
Hull Youth
Under new leadership the Hull team will be eager to prove that they are serious contenders for the play-offs and the finals. The 2007 Canadian Nationals’ Champs do have an amazing depth and their strengths include players like Canada’s Junior Team captain Edgardo Iggy Montes, the proud owner of Canada’s best (allright… 2nd best) hezi-shot. Aaron Feltham, the WaterWalkers’/Eger’s superstar may still be able to do it better.
 
Titans Youth
Two-time Canadian Nationals Champion coach Jerry Tesanovic has assembled his own troops to go after the 6th OPWL title and at the helm is non other then Canada’s Junior NT player John Conway. A rising star already, John will be a likely candidate to take this year’s MVP or scoring title or both. Great team-work and an excellent defense are the cornersone of this young team.
 
 OttawaSternes
The most interesting team is a mix of the Hull seniors combined with many local older players. …And they also have local superstar and new Olympian Sasa Palamarevic who was a hand full even at the big O! Can’t wait to see how this turns out… !!!
